Strong Showing for Hawkins, Green Party in Latest Zogby Poll Highlights Need for Inclusive Debates

Howie Hawkins, the Green Party candidate for US Senate, is running nearly even with Republican candidate John Spencer among independent voters according to a new poll released by Zogby International.

The new polls shows Hawkins with 21% of the support among independent voters, only 3% points behind the Republican candidate. Hawkins is running ahead of Green Party gubernatorial candidate Malachy McCourt, who is polling 5% overall in the race for Governor.

“These latest poll results show why Clinton refuses to debate me,” noted Howie Hawkins. “Only slightly more than half the voters had a favorable
impression of her.”

“The corporate media Time Warner, WABC, Univision, and the Buffalo News have conspired with the corporate-funded candidates Clinton and Spencer to keep the New York voters from hearing from the candidate who gives voice to the views of the majority of New Yorkers on key issues like the war, health care, and the energy crisis. Spencer and Clinton have the same general positions on these issues and argue over the details. Clinton and the corporate interests don’t want the voters to hear from the candidate committed to immediate withdrawal from Iraq, universal health care through a single public payer, and building a renewable energy infrastructure in order to create jobs, build peace, and protect the environment,” Hawkins added.

The Zogby poll was a joint project with the League of Women Voters whose board has said Hawkins meets their criteria for inclusion in the debates. The Leagues criteria include ballot qualification, a statewide campaign effort, and demonstrable public support.

Hawkins noted that he is polling at about the same level that Jesse Ventura was in his race for Governor of Minnesota when he was allowed into the
debates. Ventura went on to when that race once the voters got to hear his positions. Ventura was allowed to participate in the debates because the two major party candidates thought he would hurt their opponent more. Ever since Ventura’s meteoric rise after inclusion in the debates, the two major
parties have intensified their efforts to exclude from debates candidates who are independent of the two corporate-financed parties.
