Hawkins to debate by himself

Political Notebook Fred Pierce / Syracuse Post Standard

Syracuse’s Howie Hawkins, the Green Party U.S. Senate candidate, wasn’t invited to tonight’s debate between major party hopefuls Sen. Hillary Clinton and John Spencer, but he plans to make his thoughts known anyway.

Hawkins will hold a news conference in front of Strong Auditorium in Rochester, the site of the Clinton-Spencer showdown, to respond to points made during the televised debate. He is the only New York senate candidate calling for an immediate withdrawal from Iraq.

The debate is the first of two senate showdowns scheduled for this weekend. Clinton and Spencer will meet again at 9 a.m. Sunday on WABC television in New York City. The League of Women Voters this week pulled its support from that debate because Hawkins was not allowed to participate.
