Election Guide / U.S. SENATE

Syracuse Post-Standard

http://www.syracuse.com/blogs/elections/index.ssf?/mtlogs/syr_elections/archives/2006_08.html#189779

U.S. Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton, the only former first lady to win elected office, is running for a second term, even as she is being touted as a likely 2008 Democratic presidential candidate.

Challenging her is John Spencer, the shoot-from-the-hip former Republican mayor of Yonkers.

The contest gives New York voters a clear ideological choice between Spencer -- a staunch conservative who talks about traditional Republican values and fully supports the Bush Administration's military policy -- and Clinton, a liberal-to-moderate Democrat who voted to authorize the Iraq War but has since become a critic.

Clinton had raised more than $33 million in campaign money by the end of the summer, while Spencer, who fought off a GOP primary challenge from former Pentagon official K.T. McFarland, raised less than $4 million during the same period.

Despite a primary challenge from anti-war candidate Jonathan Tasini, Clinton has generally been able to rally Democrats unhappy with the war to her side. There are, however, several minor party candidates running as independents, including several advocating an end to U.S. involvement in the fighting.

The peace challengers include Syracuse's Howie Hawkins, the Green Party candidate.
