Hawkins Mentioned in Clinton Endorsement Editorial

Hillary Clinton for U.S. Senator

When Hillary Clinton ran and was elected New York senator in 2002, many of her critics believed she would be an invisible representative, all celebrity, no substance someone who would use the state as a stepping stone to the next political endeavor.

But Clinton, regardless of what she may aspire to be, including president of the United States, is an able and committed legislator on behalf of her constituents the citizens of New York.

And she has been anything but invisible frequently visiting and advocating for local concerns, whether they are educational or business or any of the myriad issues that affect Upstate life.

Clinton deserves another term even if it she chooses to cut it short as New York state's junior senator.

Locally, Clinton has worked with many groups, notably the Metropolitan Development Association on economic development projects and, most recently, the effort to secure a Ford Foundation grant for urban areas. Among the efforts she has spearheaded is broadband initiatives to connect remote communities as a means of drawing new residents and businesses.

In Congress, Clinton seems able to work well on both sides of the political aisle. Even her critics have said she is conciliator and a pleasure with which to work.

She has been a vocal opponent of President Bush and GOP policies, especially related to the Iraq war. While she initially supported the war, she says she believed she was supporting an entirely different scenario and outcome.

Clinton says the economy and the war are the No. 1 issues with New Yorkers. Perhaps she can play an integral role in those key areas.

Clinton is running against Republican John Spencer, the former mayor of Yonkers. A straight-shooter with a woefully underfunded campaign, Spencer trails Clinton. But credit him for attempting to run an issue-based campaign with little support.

Howie Hawkins, the Green Party candidate and Syracuse native, also is a contender for the office. Hawkins, who always brings fresh perspective to the race, vehemently denounces the Iraq war and has made it central to his campaign.

Still, Clinton is best equipped to represent Upstate and all of New York in the U.S. Senate.
