The Green Party is committed to peace and nonviolence. It has actively opposed the invasions and occupation of Iraq and Afghanistan and the expansion of the war to Pakistan. It has called for the military budget to be cut at least 50%. Within hours of the attacks on 9/11, the Green Party of NY issued a call for this to treated as the criminal terrorist act it was, not the excuse for war that the neo-cons had been calling for. It has opposed torture, spying, attacks on our civil liberties and the scapegoating of Muslims.

The only way to peace is peace.

The peace movement has repeatedly invested its votes in a war party, the Democrats. But the election of the Democrats didn't deescalate the war; it deescalated the peace movement. War for oil remains our nation's principal energy policy.

In the last two elections, after millions of Americans took to the street to protest the pending invasions, the Democrats said the way to peace was to vote for them. They won, they took control of Congress and the White House, yet the wars continue, the torture continues, the spying continues, and the military budget grows every bigger. The US has military bases in more than 100 countries.

The Green Party, one of the largest political parties in the world, and the third largest in the US, needs to get 50,000 votes for Governor to regain its official rights under NY election law. It is time for at least one peace party in NY.

The Democrats have always been a war party. They are as much a part of the military-congressional-industrial complex as the Republicans.

As long as peace activists continue to vote for the Democratic Party, they will continue to expand the power and misadventures of the military. Our Congress has always proudly proclaimed that when it comes to foreign policy, it has a bipartisan consensus - they will use the military to be the bully of the world, to force the rest of the world to comply with the agenda of corporate America, to allow multinationals to exploit their natural resources and labor, to treat weaker countries as yet another colony.

Howie Hawkins, the Green Party candidate for Governor, has said he would bring all National Guards troops home to New York. Hawkins and the two Green US Senate candidates - Cecile Lawrence and Colia Clark - have called to bring all American troops home to and cut the federal military budget 50 to 75% to create a peace dividend to rebuild America, pay for a WPA style jobs programs for the unemployed, and finance a quick transition to a carbon free America.

During the campaign, Hawkins has participated in protests outside the Hancock National Guard Airbase in Syracuse, opposing it as a site to remotely control reaper killer drones in Afghanistan and Pakistan.

Julia Willebrand, Green Party candidate for NY State Comptroller, said that if elected, she will use her position to divest the Common Retirement Fund from Israel until such time as the government of Israel complies with international law and the human rights of Palestinians. Under current conditions, the Palestinian people are denied their legal right to self-determination and the right of Palestinian refugees to return to their homes in Israel. Divesting from Israel is a powerful nonviolent strategy not only to pressure Israel to end its military occupation but also to guarantee equality under the law for all in Israel-Palestine, especially including its non-Jewish citizens. The Green Party is on the side of the many Israeli and Palestinian organizations working together to achieve a just resolution through nonviolent means.
