Mayoral candidate Howie Hawkins had a news conference today to unveil a Green proposal for "Sustainable Syracuse," built around a centerpiece of a reopened Erie Canal.

I'll leave the details to my Post-Standard colleague, John Mariani. But the emergence of Hawkins as a factor in the mayoral race may be the most interesting development in what had been a humdrum campaign. And the most interesting development at the news conference was a surprise appearance by Republican council candidate Bill Harper, who all but endorsed Hawkins for mayor:

"This is truly the way to revitalize Syracuse," Harper said, gesturing at Hawkins' plans, which were presented as an alternative to Destiny USA.

The charts and schematics for the Green vision for Syracuse will be on display downtown, at Harper's Coffee Pavilion in Hanover Square.
