SYRACUSE, N.Y. -- It appears the race for Congress in the 25th District will be a three way affair. Howie Hawkins has filed independent petitions seeking a ballot spot for the race against Democrat Dan Maffei and Republican Dale Sweetland.

Hawkins needed 4,000 signatures to qualify for the Congressional race. He filed with 6,000 signatures.

Democrats are expected to review his papers closely with an eye toward a challenge to keep him off the ballot.

Hawkins' platform on a U.S. withdrawal from Iraq and Afghanistan and a demand for so-called "economic justice" could wean some voters from the Democratic line.
