NORTH SYRACUSE, N.Y. -- Dan Maffei could not have asked for a rosier scenario. Polling, albeit a poll he paid for, shows him with a double digit lead. He's raised close to $2 milllion, dwarfing the amounts raised by his opponents, and he's just down the ticket from a presidential candidate who seems to be headed to an overwhelming win.
"We need to be part of that change. Upstate New York shouldn't be left behind and we need to have a representative with fresh ideas, a lot of energy and the ability to work with everybody, democrats, republicans, whoever, in order to get things done for our region," said Dan Maffei, (D) Congressional Candidate-25th District.
As might be expected, Maffei's opponents see things a bit differently. Republican Dale Sweetland admits republicans are facing a tough year, but says history is on his side.
It has been a race that has been watched closely nationwide, as democrats try to improve their majority in the House, and the GOP struggles to maintain its numbers. Our Bill Carey says there is just a week to go before a resolution of a 3-way race for congress in the 25th District.
John Kerry carried Onondaga County. Al Gore carried Onondaga County. Bill Clinton carried Onondaga County. But, Jim Walsh always won. I think people have a different opinion about where they want to vote. They do vote for people instead of parties here," said Dale Sweetland, (R) Congressional Candidate-25th District.
Green Populist party contender Howie Hawkins says Obama does change the picture, though.
"He'll have big coattails, and I didn't expect, initially, to be running against such a tidal wave," said Howie Hawkins, (G) Congressional Candidate-25th District.
One week to go and none of the contenders are giving up.
"If you're not in the game, you can't win. You know, anything can happen," said Hawkins.
"I think we're very close. When I go out and campaign, and reports that I get from people, this is going to be very close," said Sweetland.
"I'm not taking a thing for granted, because this is the most important part of the political process. This last week when even the undecided voters decide," said Maffei.
A final week that, in politics, can seem like an eternity.
