CENTRAL NEW YORK -- The Democratic and Republican candidates for the 25th Congressional District cast their votes early in the day. Dan Maffei and Dale Sweetland are both hoping to replace retiring Congressman James Walsh. Both men say they think they have a good shot today.
The third party candidate for congress in the 25th District is hoping to send a message with his vote total today. Green Populist candidate Howie Hawkins says he and other third party candidates are hoping to change the agenda, forcing the major parties to reconsider their positions on economic issues and the issues of both Iraq and Afghanistan.
Just how well will he do?
"If I hit 10 percent, I'll have gotten more votes, a higher percentage than any other Green candidate for Congress in the history of our party. So, that would be another benchmark, we're looking at. And who knows? It's a three-way race and 35 percent could win in a close race, so ‘till the votes are counted, we're still hopeful," Hawkins said.
Hawkins has run for office more than a dozen times.
