Hawkins announces second congressional bid
By: Giselle Phelps
SYRACUSE, N.Y. -- He's unsuccessfully run for public office six times in the past and now Howie Hawkins says he plans to run again.
Hawkins says he's entering the 25th Congressional District race as an independent Green-Populist candidate. He says his platform will be based on withdrawing from Iraq and Afghanistan, establishing a national single-payer health care system and restoring constitutional government.
Hawkins says the two major party candidates, Democrat Dan Maffei and Republican Dale Sweetland, are not addressing the issues.
"We're confident in sharpening the issues and defining the debate. We're hopeful that we can make this a competitive race and win. And, the votes that we receive keep increasing every year and most people keep encouraging us to run, they agree with the issues," said Hawkins.
Hawkins ran for Congress in 2004 against Congressman Jim Walsh. He says that was a low-key campaign, because and he was more focused on supporting presidential candidate Ralph Nader. This time, he says he's focused on his own race.
