Howie Hawkins, the Green Populist candidate running for the 25th Congressional District seat, wants no new nuclear power plants built in Oswego County, or anywhere else in Central New York for that matter.

Hawkins opposes the proposed construction of a fourth reactor at Nine Mile Point.

"Nuclear power will make our energy problems worse, not better," Hawkins said in a statement released by his campaign. "A much better way to secure energy supplies, reduce global warming and create living wage jobs is a major investment in energy efficiency."

Money used to build one new nuclear power plant could instead be used to retrofit 1 million homes for energy efficiency, Hawkins suggested. Such a move would save more energy than a nuclear reactor would generate, he said.

Hawkins also argued that nuclear power is too expensive, falls vulnerable to terrorist attack, creates waste for which there is no long-term solution and increases the dangers of radioactive pollution.
