25th Congressional District candidates to attend many events to discuss the issues

Calendars full with debates, forums

The three 25th Congressional District candidates will be busy until Election Day appearing at public forums and debates to try to persuade voters they would be their best representative.

Democrat Dan Maffei, Republican Dale Sweetland and Green Populist Howie Hawkins are vying to replace retiring Rep. James Walsh, R-Onondaga, who has had the job for 20 years. The 25th District includes all of Onondaga and Wayne counties, and parts of Cayuga and Monroe counties.

Sweetland and Hawkins have agreed to participate in all 10 events. Maffei declined to participate in two because of scheduling conflicts.

"Dan is trying to participate in as many forums and debates as possible because he thinks it's important voters have a chance to hear what the candidates have to say," said Mike Whyland, a Maffei campaign spokesman.

Voters can check out what the candidates have to say at the following Syracuse-area events: Forums:

7 p.m. Thursday Oct. 2: Universal health care forum, sponsored by the CNY Alliance for Retired Americans, at the Palace Theatre, 2384 James St. Syracuse University professor Eric Kingson will give a presentation, followed by responses by the candidates. Moderator is Jean Kessner, former WIXT-TV reporter.

1 p.m. Monday Oct. 6: At Time Warner Cable's studio, 6005 Fair Lakes Road, DeWitt, off New Venture Gear Drive, sponsored by AARP New York, the statewide advocacy group for people ages 50 and older. The forum will be broadcast by News10Now. The public is invited, but asked to RSVP the AARP at a toll-free number, 1-877-926-8300. News10Now reporter Bill Carey will moderate.

7 p.m. Monday Oct. 6: Education forum, sponsored by Parents for Public Schools, Henninger High School cafeteria, 600 Robinson Road. SU professor Robert McClure will moderate.

7 p.m. Thursday Oct. 9: At Le Moyne College, 1419 Salt Springs Road, focusing on economics and energy. It is sponsored by Le Moyne's Madden Institute for Business Education. Maffei is not participating in this debate because of a scheduling conflict and because it falls on the Jewish holiday of Yom Kippur, Whyland said.

6 p.m. Wednesday Oct. 15: At Syracuse University's Maxwell School of Citizenship and Public Affairs, SU campus, sponsored by the Maxwell School and WTVH-TV (Channel 5). To be broadcast on WTVH. McClure and WTVH anchor Donna Adamo will question the candidates. Debates:

8:15 a.m. Thursday Oct. 16: Thursday Morning Roundtable at Drumlins, 800 Nottingham Road. To be broadcast on WCNY-FM (91.3). SU professor Grant Reeher is moderating.

4 p.m. Saturday Oct. 18: At Syracuse Stage, 820 E. Genesee St., sponsored by 40 Below.

7 p.m. Wednesday Oct. 22: At WCNY-TV (Channel 24), 506 Old Liverpool Road, Salina. To be broadcast at 8 p.m. on WCNY-TV and WXXI-TV. WSTM-TV (Channel 3) anchor Matt Mulcahy will moderate.

7 p.m. Thursday Oct. 30: At the Jewish Community Center, 5655 Thompson Road, co-sponsored by the Syracuse Jewish Federation and other groups. To be broadcast on WSYR-TV (Channel 9).

7 p.m. Monday Nov. 3: At Onondaga Community College's Storer Auditorium in Ferrante Hall, 4585 West Seneca Turnpike, sponsored by WSYR-AM (570), to be broadcast live on WSYR-AM. WSYR talk show host Jim Reith is moderating. Maffei is not participating because he will be doing a whistle stop tour on the Erie Canal and attending a campaign rally in Monroe County, Whyland said.
