State BOE review says Hawkins petition is valid
The staff of the State Board of Elections that has reviewed the objection of local democrats to Howie Hawkins' Green Populist petition for Congress has concluded that only 2,159 of the challenges are valid, leaving Hawkins with 4,141 valid signatures. 3,500 are needed to get on the ballot.
The official hearing at the State Board of Elections in Albany will begin at noon. Hawkins will attend to argue that even more of his signatures are valid.
"If the Democrats spent as much time challenging President Bush as they did the petitions of progressive third party candidates, we would see a whole lot more progress on ending the war in Iraq, halting climate change and providing health care to all Americans," noted Mark Dunlea, an attorney and former Chair of the Green Party of NYS who is assisting Hawkins.
A number of top democratic leaders were recently indicted in Pennsylvania partially for using state resources to file challenges against the petitions of Green Party candidates and independent Ralph Nader.
