About the proposed “chess park”, aka Sankofa Park, next to Beauchamp Library on South Salina St. I’ve talks to many of the parties noted in the several local news items reporting on the public meetings that were held to announce the plan. None of those people were aware that it’s being called a chess park. Seriously. The phrase was coined by the journalists who reported the news. Both the design company and the landscape architect mentioned in those news items were surprised to learn that it’s being called a chess park. Chess was only listed as one of many activities that might occur there. It seems that Craig Davis, a local business owner who was at one of the public meetings, suggested that it would be nice to see people playing chess in the new park. Somehow, the reporters present at the meeting started calling it a chess park. As a teacher in a Southside school, and the chess club advisor there, I think it’s a great idea. However, it seems that the people actually building the park do not see chess as a priority. That’s too bad. It will be interesting to see if and when the park gets built, and whether it has any chess tables. Meanwhile, I have been invited to help the Beauchamp Library plan chess activities in support of the “chess park” they think is being built next door. That much will happen, no matter whether the park has chess tables or not. Bet on it.
