Contribution Policy

Hawkins for Mayor Campaign Contribution Policy

The Hawkins for Mayor campaign is limiting the size of cumulative contributions it will accept from any individual, family, or organization to $1,000.

$3,436.50 in cumulative contributions is the maximum permitted by state Election Law for individuals, corporations, and Political Action Committees (PACs) for Mayor of Syracuse in 2017. But the Hawkins campaign believes these contribution limits are too high. They enable a small number of rich large contributors to buy their politicians. The Hawkins campaign is counting on a large number of small contributions from ordinary working people.

The Hawkins campaign does not accept contributions from for-profit businesses (including proprietorships and partnerships) or from corporate-sponsored PACs. We want to represent people, not corporate interests.

The Hawkins campaign does accept contributions from the PACs of democratic people's organizations, including labor unions, cooperatives, party committees, and peace, environmental, and community organizations.

The New York State Election Law requires us to report the name and address to the Board of Elections in our Campaign Finance Reports of contributors of $100 or more cumulatively.

We do not report names and addresses to the Board of Elections in our Campaign Finance Reports of contributors of a cumulative amount of under $100, which are reported as unitemized, without the name and address.

By law, contributions are not taax-deductible for federal, state, or municipal income tax purposes.
