Hawkins to urge vote on the real issues of the War, Health Care, and Global Warming November 6th, 2006 11:00 am |
Hawkins for US Senate

News Advisory/Notice of Syracuse Press Conference
For Immediate Release: November 6, 2006
For More Information: Howie Hawkins, (315) 425-1019, howie@hawkinsforsenate.net
Whether or not Spencer said Clinton had plastic surgery is a distraction, Hawkins says
Subject: The real life and death issues of the Senate race: war, health care, global warming
Howie Hawkins, the Green Party candidate for US Senate challenging Hillary Clinton, will hold a press conference on Monday, July 24th in Syracuse to discuss what he sees as “the real issues of the campaign – the war, the health insurance crisis, and global warming.”
“The majority of New Yorkers agree with me in opposing the war in Iraq, supporting single-payer health insurance for all, and supporting massive public investment in renewable energy instead of wars for oil. Clinton and Spencer oppose us on those policies. All the media buzz about whether or not Spencer said Clinton had plastic surgery has turned the campaign debate into a farce and distracts from the life and death issues of the war, health care, and global warming, “ Hawkins said.
Hawkins will also discuss the TV ads he is airing on Monday, as well as a last minute mailer from the Working Families Party that says Cindy Sheehan would vote on the Working Families line when in fact she has endorsed the Green Party candidates Howie Hawkins for US Senator and Malachy McCourt for Governor.
The only published poll to have included Hawkins, a Zogby poll released October 10, found him with 21 percent of the independent vote, which is over 5 percent of the overall vote based on party enrollment figures. If those numbers hold for Hawkins on election day, he will receive more votes than any independent progressive candidate for US Senate in New York has ever received. The previous high was 4 percent and 210,00 votes for W.E.B. DuBois in 1950 as the American Labor Party candidate.
Hawkins has been active in movements for peace, justice, the environment, and independent politics since the late 1960s. He is a co-founder of the national Green Party. A former Marine, he helped organize opposition to the Vietnam War and was co-founder of the anti-nuclear Clamshell Alliance in 1976. An active member of the Teamster's Union, he presently works unloading trucks and rail cars at UPS.

AN OPEN DEBATE: "SHOULD PROGRESSIVES BE DEMOCRATS?" (Progressive Democrats of America., Working Families Party vs. Green Party, International Socialist Organization) / November 3rd, 2006 at 7:00pm |
People on the left are extremely distressed about the political direction of the country.
The Democratic Party has been, to say the least, ineffective in its opposition to the Bush agenda. With the political climate swinging so far to the right, what's a progressive voter to do? Is it possible to reform the Democratic Party from within to influence it toward the left? Or would an independent third party, like the Greens, be a better alternative on Election Day, or in the long term?
FREE ADMISSION.
Subways: A,B,C,D,E,F,V to West 4th St.; N,R,W to 8th St.; #1 to Christopher St., #6 to Astor Pl.
Participants: Affirmative:
Al Ronzoni, of the Progressive Democrats of America (PDA), Michael Hirsch of the Democratic Socialists of America (DSA), Howie Hawkins, U.S. Senate candidate of the Green Party (GP), Danny Katch of the International Socialist Organization (ISO)
Moderator: Evan Giller, member of ISO, PDA, WFP
An open debate from the floor will follow presentations. Please come and participate in the debate or just listen. It promises to be a stimulating evening. Seating is limited, please arrive early. |

Hawkins for Senate: Gathering of the Greens / November 2nd, 2006 at 7:30pm |
Support the Hawkins for Senate campaign and the GPNYS Peace Slate. Come hear Howie Hawkins, Julia Willebrand, and other speakers at this gathering for Greens to gear up for the last few days of this historic statewide campaign.
(Take the 3 train to 145th St. station, then walk down three blocks to Minisink, which is right on the northeast corner of Lenox and 142nd Street. Or take the 2 or the 3 to 135th St. and walk up Lenox.)
This is a unique opportunity for us to support the Hawkins campaign and to bring Greens city-wide together for an important gathering of forces for the final weekend of the campaign. It is also a chance to invite non-Greens (hopefully **future** Greens!) into our ranks to get involved with our efforts to attract lots of voters on November 7th.

RALLY! Let Howie Hawkins in the Debates! Meet at 8:00 am (we'll bring the COFFEE and BAGELS) / October 22nd, 2006 at |
Over 500,000 Iraqis have been killed since the U.S. invasion and the media is censoring anti-war candidates.
On Sunday morning, October 22, WABC will host a Senatorial debate between Hillary Clinton and John Spencer, both of whom support continuing the US occupation of Iraq . The debate organizers, which include the Buffalo News and Univision as well as WABC, have refused to invite the Green Party’s Howie Hawkins, despite the fact that many New Yorkers agree with his call for immediate withdrawal from Iraq.
Join Howie Hawkins in a protest outside the debate to let the corporate media know that democracy means presenting voters with an actual choice about one of the most important issues in politics today. We’ll bring a radio so you can listen to the “debate” at 9:00 and then stick around for Howie’s press conference at 10:30. |

What: Joint Press Conference with 3rd Party US Senatorial candidates Howie Hawkins (Green Party), Jeff Russell (Libertarian Party), William Van Auken (Socialist Equality Party).
When: Monday, October 23rd 1pm
Where: LCA Press Room, Legislative Office Building Rm. 130, State and Swan Sts. Albany
(Albany) Three of the candidates for the US Senate from New York will hold a press conference on Monday October 23rd in Albany at 1 PM to discuss their opposition to Iraq war and to object to their exclusion from the only two televised debates from the US Senate.
The press conference will be at 1 PM at the LCA press room (Rm. 130) in the Legislative Office Building. It will be the first joint appearance of the candidates in the election.
The three candidates – Howie Hawkins of the Green Party; Jeff Russell of the Libertarian Party; and William Van Auken of the Socialist Equality Party – all support bringing the troops home from Iraq. The latest "Washington Post"-ABC Poll, October 5-8, 2006, found that 63 percent of Americans think that the war in Iraq has not been worth fighting, the highest percentage of the Bush presidency. Yet the televised debates have been limited to the two candidates with the minority position of supporting the war in Iraq. The League of Women Voters withdrew their endorsement of the recent debates due to the exclusion of Howie Hawkins.
Howie Hawkins has been active in the movements of social justice, the environment, and independent progressive politics since the late 1960s when he was in high school in the San Francisco Bay Area. A former Marine, he helped organize opposition to the Vietnam War and was a co-founder of the anti-nuclear Clamshell Alliance in 1976. He was a co-founder of the Green Party in the United States in 1984.
Jeff Russell graduated from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in Troy, NY in 1972, and worked for 30 years as a computer programmer at the New York State Office for Technology. In 1980, he joined the Libertarian Party because it was the only political party he could find that consistently and unfailingly defended the rights of individuals against government abuse.
Bill Van Auken has been a member of the socialist movement for more than 35 years. Van Auken is a full-time writer for the World Socialist Web Site and ran as the SEP candidate for president in 2004. |

Glens Falls Fundraiser / July 22nd, 2006 at 6:00 pm |
A full house of over 50 people turned out on a sweltering night to listen and exchange questions and ideas with Howie. The night was a rousing success with almost $2,000 raised, lots of signatures added to the Ballot Petitions and many new campaign volunteers.
Thanks Matt! |
