Subject: The need for a National Oil Company.

Howie Hawkins, the Green Party candidate for US Senate challenging Hillary Clinton, will hold a press conference on Monday, July 24th in Glens Falls to discuss how a National Oil Company could stabilize oil prices and help develop renewable energy sources.

"While the invasion of Iraq has been a disaster for the Iraqi citizens and American consumers and taxpayers, it has been a huge windfall for the private American oil companies. The five oil giants have seen their profits soar from $34 billion in 2002 to $113 billion in 2005, including $36.1 billion for Exxon alone. The value of their oil reserves increased by more than $2.3 trillion. We need to help protect American consumers against the rapidly escalating price hikes for gasoline, yet we can't rely on the Big Oil companies to protect the wallets of working Americans," Hawkins says.

Hawkins will also discuss other pertinent issues in his Senate campaign, including the role the US should play in stablizing the situation in the Middle East, with the current Israel-Lebanon-Iran crisis.

Hawkins has been active in movements for peace, justice, the environment, and independent politics since the late 1960s. He is a co-founder of the national Green Party. A former Marine, he helped organize opposition to the Vietnam War and was co-founder of the anti-nuclear Clamshell Alliance in 1976. An active member of the Teamster's Union, he presently works unloading trucks and rail cars at UPS. Hawkins received 47,771 votes as the Greens' 2002 candidate for state comptroller.
